Saturday Stories...Holly the Escape Artist

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Saturday, August 31, 2013, In : Stories

Holly the escape artist

Over the years, Holly became known as the Houdini of Houdini’s.  Since she was our first Husky, It was “trial by fire”, and we had to learn quickly what worked and what didn’t.  Stalls were often husky-proof, but not Holly-proof.  It was because of Holly that I came up with the 5-point husky escape plan:

1.       Jump it

2.       Climb it

3.       Go through it

4.       Go under it

5.       Outsmart it

From that first stall, every one I have built since has...

Friday Focus...Cartoon Alter Ego, Denali

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Friday, August 30, 2013, In : Friday Focus
I've decided to add the Cartoon Alter Egos to the Friday Focus category.  Seems to be a better fit.  :-)
Today, I will start by re-posting the very first one, Denali.  Those of you that have read this one, please bear with us as others catch up.

Denali’s chosen alter ego is the bumble snow monster from the classic seasonal cartoon “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer”.  Besides the obvious fact that they are both white, they shared other similar qualities.  In the beginning of the cartoon, bu...

An introduction to a new featured category...Thursday Throwback!

1) Kisses from Kallen - Baby Kallen gives Holly Kisses on a hot summer day:

2) Maverick and Miya - In a purely happenstance meeting, Maverick (on the left, from Daisie and...

Wednesday Weekly Update for 8-28-13

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, In : Frosty Meadow Happenings
  • Miya’s puppies are now two weeks old.  They are starting to open their eyes, and get up on all four legs and walk around.  They are really cute at this point, watching them try to walk.  They are all well fed and doing well.
  • As of now, 4 males have been sold, with one male and one female still to go.  Click HERE to see pics!
  • Meanwhile, on the non-Husky front, the ducks from the fair are getting ready for processing on Saturday.  They were big ducks at the fair, but now they are like Than...

Tuesday Tech Talk...Please don't cut the fur!!

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, In : Tech Talk

Brush it out, comb it out, blow it out…but NEVER cut it, or worse, shave it!

This is a re-post from a while back.  In light of a recent conversation, I thought it would be good to post again.

Siberian Huskies are notorious shedders.  Their coats consist of two layers.  An inner coat and an outer coat.  The softer inner coat serves as an insulator for the cold of winter, making them able to withstand temperatures as low as 50-60 degrees below zero!  The more coarse outer coat serves tw...

Saturday Stories…The Couch in the Stall

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Saturday, August 24, 2013, In : Stories

Something we have always done here at Frosty Meadow Husky Farm, is try to make the Huskies as comfortable as possible.  Giving them as much space as possible, giving them companionship, keeping them protected from the elements in the winter, and providing ample air flow in the summer, are just a few of the things we do for them.  We are always looking for ways to improve on their quality of life.  One of the things we have learned along the way though is that not everything goes as planned.  ...

Meet the Siberian Huskies, Part 6…Peyton

Like I mentioned last week in the segment focusing on Miya, we decided to expand the pack, and found Miya and her sister Peyton.  They both came to us around Christmas of 2010.  While Miya has the ice blue eyes, Peyton had deep brown eyes.  It was quite a noticeable contrast from the start. The other big difference was the personality.  Miya seemed more playful, and Peyton seemed more relaxed.  As a puppy, she was more content on your lap than any...

First pics!

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Thursday, August 22, 2013, In : Puppies
Today's post is simply a few short words and the first pictures of Miya and her puppies.  They are now over one week old, and are doing well.

Miya standing guard over her pups.  Although she has a leash, this is actually one of the only times they likely don't need one.  We play it safe, but mama doesn't run from the puppies.  She sticks around and closely guards them.

Close up of the puppies.  Five boys, and one girl.  And as a bonus, one is posing for the camera!

Wendesday Weekly Update

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, In : Frosty Meadow Happenings

Wednesday Weekly Update for 8-21-13

  • The day has come!  Miya’s puppies were born on 8-14, as mentioned in a previous post.  A small litter by Miya’s standards, but average in general.  Six total puppies, 5 male and 1 female.  They are all gray and white, some darker than others.  We anticipate that most or all will have blue eyes, but it’s possible that we could see a brown eye or two.
  • They are now one week old, and are doing very well.  All are eating well with big appetites and are...

Tuesday Tech Talk...Identifying puppies

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, In : Tech Talk

One of the most commonly asked questions when people come to look at and choose a puppy is, “How will you be able to tell them apart?”  or  “Are you sure you will be able to tell which one is mine when we pick him/her up?”  The answer is yes we can, but it is not easy.

Some litters are easy to distinguish.  An example of this is Rose’s litter from early 2013.  Six puppies, four different color combinations and the ones that were the same were 1 male and 1 female.

There are times...

Monday Motivation....All about motivation.

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Monday, August 19, 2013, In : Monday Motivation

I’ve listened to many of the top motivational speakers over the past 15 years…Tony Robbins, Earl Nightingale, Brian Klemmer, and many others, but my favorite is the great Zig Ziglar.  He has a multitude of different motivational and instructional series’, but in particular, I like the “How to Stay Motivated” series.  Many of his most classic quotes are included in this series, although he also indicates throughout that his quotes may come from other sources.  Over the years, I’ve ...

Sunday Funnies....Snippets!

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Sunday, August 18, 2013, In : Sunday Funnies

My apologies for not having a "Saturday Stories" edition this week. Computer issues prevented our normally scheduled post.  Blogging can be exceptionally difficult when you don't have a reliable computer!  Oh well...Viruses are a part of everyday computer life and we must deal and move on.

Today for the Sunday funnies, I have a series of snippets.  Observing their zany antics can be difficult when there is a lot to be accomplished.  That was the case during this entire week as we worked while ...

Meet the Siberian Huskies, Part 5…Miya

Miya came to us around Christmas of 2010, along with her sister Peyton.  After the original 5, we decided that it truly was our destiny to be breeders of this magnificent dog.  Our combination of God-given talents made us suitors to take on the responsibility of helping others enjoy the Husky.  It was time to expand the pack and Miya and Peyton were the perfect additions.  Miya is a beautiful gray and white Siberian Husky with ice blue eyes.  She ha...

The day has arrived!

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Thursday, August 15, 2013, In : Puppies
We anticipated Miya could have her puppies at any time, as mentioned in yesterday's blog.  She had the litter of 6 last evening!  They are all gray and white, with varying shades.  Five of them are males, and 1 is a female.  Three of them appear to be the lighter shade of gray and white like Kallen.  The other three appear to to a darker shade like Miya.  All are well, and Miya appears to be finished with her labor.  We will keep everyone posted and soon have a group picture.  Individual pict...

Wednesday Weekly Update

The summer rolls on...Here's the latest!
  • Miya's time is coming soon!  The long anticipated wait for her puppies is almost here.  Likely, it will be in the next week or so.  We will keep everyone informed here, on the puppy page, and on Facebook as that day arrives.
  • Miya is a little strange when it comes to birthing her puppies.  We have a nice comfortable carpeted area for them during the birth and nursing of the puppies, and most of them love it.  Miya however, prefers to dig a hole.  I know t...

Tuesday Tech Talk...What is Animal Digest?

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, In : Tech Talk

Now that the fair is winding down, it's time to get back to regular post!

This week on Tuesday Tech Talk, I felt it was time to re-visit the issues concerning dog foods.  Many of you have seen this information, but it also serves as a reminder.  In the coming weeks, we will dig deeper into which foods we recommend and which ones we don’t.

Animal Digest

What is Animal Digest, and is it good or bad for my dog?

Ever look at the ingredients on a bag of standard over-the-counter dog food?  S...

Fair Follies!

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Monday, August 12, 2013, In : General

In lieu of there being no Sunday Funnies (as well as Thurs, Fri, and Sat posts) this week due to the fair, today’s post, instead of Monday Motivation, will be notes and tidbits from observations I made at the fair over the weekend.

  • Not saying there is anything wrong with this, but you will not find a larger collection of pick-up trucks and John Deere caps assembled in one location than at the county fair!
  • People come to the fair for a variety of reasons.  To show animals, for other co...

Wednesday Weekly Update for 8-7-13

  • Miya is now really starting to show.  We figure her due date to be in the vicinity of August 18-20. She has been officially moved to the birthing stall.  I am not sure she likes the solitude at this point, but at the day approaches, she will be glad.
  • The summer coat blowing season is finally in the homestretch.  Only Demon and Denali are still in process, and they are both at about 75% complete.  Kallen and Miya don’t seem to want to lose much this yea...

Tuesday Tech Talk...Is it Rough Play, or is it a Fight?

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Tuesday, August 6, 2013, In : Tech Talk

I recently read a lot about individuals asking how to stop their two huskies from fighting with each other.  It got me to thinking about what is considered an actual fight, and what is more rough play.  There IS a difference.  Did I emphasize that enough?  A HUGE difference.  And you really don't know the difference until you know the difference.

I will warn everyone reading this that this is not for the faint of heart.

First, let me explain the levels:

1)       Level One -- Normal Pla...

Monday Motivation -- Is your root system in place?

The Story of the Chinese Bamboo Tree.

Many have heard the story of the Chinese bamboo tree.  I’ve heard variations, but they all boil down to the same philosophical lesson.  As the story goes, to plant a bamboo tree, you take a 12-15 inch stalk from an existing tree.  You dig a hole, and plant it standing up, covering it completely.

Bamboo trees typically exist in rain forests.  The reason for this is they must be watered daily, and kept moist.  Now, I don’t know all the exact detai...

The Sunday Funnies!

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Sunday, August 4, 2013, In : Sunday Funnies
It's time again for the Sunday Funnies as we are getting ready for the upcoming fair.  The dogs were out as usual, and were being their normal goofy selves.
  • All the dogs are out except Miya, who is pregnant and has an attitude.  Which is typical.  She was out with me on a leash and we were walking around the fenced area.  Lots of growling but Miya was safe outside the fence.  Or should I say the others were safe inside.  If I let her in, there would surely be a fight.  More on that subject i...

Saturday Stories...The name game

The Name Game (Updated, and re-posted from a few months ago.)

I was pondering recently how many names everyone has come up with over the years.  So I took it upon myself to make the list and see if we all covered the alphabet.  As you can see, not quite yet.  We are still missing a dozen or so names, but there are 4 letters not covered.  F,U,W,&X.

There were a few instances that a name was used more than once, and I didn’t include multiples.

As you can see, the letters “K”, “M”...

Friday Focus...Demon and Denali

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Friday, August 2, 2013, In : Friday Focus

Meet the Siberian Huskies, Part 4…Denali and Demon

In today’s edition of “Friday Focus”, we will focus on both Demon and Denali.  Since they are brothers, their stories are similar.   In February of 2009, we started looking to expand the pack by adding another male.  We wanted to stay with AKC, and in our searches we found Denali and Demon.   We were actually looking for a black and white Husky, and found Demon.  When we went to pick him up, we discovered that an all-white Husky wa...

Cartoon Alter Ego's...Akira

Posted by Andrew Kronenberger on Thursday, August 1, 2013, In : Friday Focus

Today is Akira’s turn for a Cartoon Alter Ego.  Akira came to us via rescue in 2009.  Her previous owners brought her to us when one became allergic.  Originally, we put her with the other dogs in the stalls, but realized quickly that she was not fitting in.  Her extremely friendly and timid nature did not mesh well with the others who wanted to play aggressively.  At the time, we had no Huskies in the house, and decided she would be a good fit there.  Now 5 years old, Akira has become a ...
