A quick Pre-Thanksgiving update!

Winter is rapidly approaching,  and we are hustling to prepare everything for its onslaught.  The back wall is finished, complete with new windows and insulation.  The old stalls in the northwest corner are gone and the two windows have been replaced, as well as the framing and insulation.  The corner is ready for the new stalls that will be there.  In the front (southwest) corner, 2 small windows have been added as well.  The entire barn is now insulated, mi...

Very Cool and Interesting Colors

A few of our spring litter’s had interesting colors (a few agouti and dirty faced pups) as Gypsy and Quinn had their first litters.  Some of our most beautiful pups came from these litters!  We loved the colors so much that it enticed us to purchase Onyx.  (More on her later)

It’s that time of the year!  The wonderful mud and muck that arrives in the late winter and early spring.  While there wasn’t much in the way of snow melt-off this year, there hasn’t been a shortage of rain.  The play area for the dogs has become a muddy mess.  Bag after bag of pine pellets have certainly been helpful, but Mother Nature has been quite relentless of late.  The pine pellets break down into saw dust and do a great job in absorbing moisture.  A little goes a long way, but w...

Christmas season is upon us, and all of the decorations are up including the Nativity, the lights, and the tree.  The lawn mower, grill, and other “summer” items are tucked away for the winter.  Soon, the snow will fly. 

In past seasons, as the fans in the barn get put away, the electric buckets and heat lamps come out.  This year is a little different.  We did put out the heat lamps for all of the pups, and will likely do the same for the upcoming litters, but they will not be needed a...

*  Once again, I’ve slacked a little with blogging, and it’s now been a few months since the last one.  So I am long overdue with updates!

*  The summer litters are all now in their new homes.  Overall, it was a disappointing summer and early fall puppy-wise.  Since Luna’s litter in April, we only had 3 litters.  (Ice, Ziva, & Josie)  Many of the anticipated heat cycles were delayed longer than expected.  The good news is that we are now looking at a very active fall and winter.  As of...

Ice has given birth to 5 pups!  4-females and 1 male.  The male is all-white, and the females are white, red and white, and 2 gray and whites.  They were born early Sunday morning July 9^th, a little behind their anticipated arrival of July the 4^th.  They are sold or are sale pending.  The expected go home time will be Labor Day Weekend.  Ziva meanwhile, is expected to give birth any time now.  She is looking big, so we feel the possibility of a big litter exists.  But as with every other litt...

Summer is now fully upon us.  The heat is on, the fans are out, and the swimming pools and water tubs are being used regularly.  Summer projects are in full swing.  We are now up to 4 completed new stalls, and are on target to pour the cement barn floor with floor drain by the end of the summer.  At that point, we should have at least 7 completed stalls.  This fall, we then figure to remove all remaining old style stalls along the west wall, and build the new stalls on that side.   Next sprin...

Almost a month has gone by since the last blog post…already!

Mild Winter

It was actually a very mild winter, with very little snow.  I like a mild winter, but there are 2 reasons why a cold, snowy winter is acceptable.  One that we all know is that the dogs really do love running and playing in the snow.  We haven’t had much to speak of in the last few winters, and I think they have forgotten what it’s like.  Two, It seems that the harsher the win...

It’s the Holiday Season!
The Holiday Season is upon us.  With Thanksgiving behind us and the celebration of Christmas upcoming, it is always a busy time of the year.  Here at the farm, it is no different.  In our last report, we mentioned the late summer lull.  We anticipated the next round of puppies to arrive in the November time frame.  Well, nature tends to do things its own way sometimes!  We can finally confidently pinpoint the arrival of our next round of litters.  We expect 5 litters...

It’s been many months since our last “Husky Report”, and we now have many new families that are part of the Frosty Meadow Family.  In our last update, we were saying goodbye to the last of the late winter/early spring puppies.  Since that point, there were 4 additional litters.  Josie, Rose, Ice, and Aleu all had litters, and all the pups went to their new homes in July.  We welcome all of the new families!

The grip of old man winter has finally loosened, and the sights, sound, and smells of Spring are in the air!  It was a relatively mild winter, but it was still winter nonetheless.  We can now turn our focus to the projects and activities that arrive with the warmer weather:

I mentioned in my last post that I would outline our goals for 2016.  In a continuous effort to better the lives of our Huskies, and also to make our lives easier, we are often brainstorming on different projects to accomplish.  In 2015 we were finally able to begin phase 1 of the new barn stalls.  We changed out the large corner stall with a dirt floor to 2 smaller (yet still quite large) stalls with a concrete floor.  We wanted test out the concrete floor before moving forward to learn th...

It’s been several weeks since we’ve had a Husky Report. Much has happened since!  Here are the latest happenings:

• Aleu’s puppies recently went to their new homes.  Thanks to all the new puppy owners!  This was Aleu’s 4^th litter, and we anticipate 1-2 more litters and then it will be time for retirement.

Now that summer has wound down and Autumn is beginning, it’s time for another Husky Report.  Plenty going on, so let’s get to it:

• First and foremost, Most of you by now know of the passing of our beloved Daisie Mae.  She was one of our original 3 huskies.  (Along with Holly and Brutus)  Of the 3, only Holly now survives.  We will miss Daisie.  She had her own demeanor that will never be duplicated!

• Saturday, we had our 5^th annual Husky Reunion.  It was in our opinion, very successful!...

The busy summer continues, with a brief timeout for a very nice getaway weekend on Lake Cumberland.  It was our first time on a houseboat, and for the most part we enjoyed it.  There was a major learning curve.  It was like taking a driver’s test in a Semi without prior practice!

It’s been a busy couple weeks since our last update!  With spring and warmer weather in full gear, there are projects galore.

• We finally were able to move the manure pile and clean out the barn.  It took most of last Sunday to accomplish, but it’s finally finished!  The looks emptier than it has in quite some time!

Every year in the spring, it seems there is a week weather-wise that we’d all just as soon forget.  This past week was one of those weeks.  After opening all the barn windows last week, this week decided to relentlessly blow cold air and rain into them.  For the most part, the dogs didn’t mind, but I did put the plexiglass back up for the stall with the puppies.  They weren’t too fond of the elements.

• It’s been a busy weekend!  There was no Friday Flashback blog post on Friday, since it was Zach’s birthday.  We had a couple of puppy pickups, plus had dinner out and brought Zach and his friend to “Scene 75”, which is a go cart/laser tag/video game facility.  Lots of fun!

• Welcome to March!!  After a very long winter, March is finally here.  Thoughts of green enter my mind.  Both the green grass and leaves that are around the corner, and the green of St. Patrick’s Day!  Being ¼ Irish, I enjoy celebrating the festivities.  Perhaps not as much as others, but a beverage or two is always in order!

• Well, March decided to come in like a lion…the biggest lion on the safari!  I am guessing 6 or so inches of snow fell here today.  At least it warmed to around 30...

• Back to blogging!  After an extremely long hiatus, I am getting back started with routine blogging.  It won’t be a daily thing, but hopefully it will be a few times per week.  We finally upgraded our computer.  One of the main reason I have been away from blogging was the fact that our laptop (and only) computer was not doing very well.  It didn’t get along with this website, and downloading Firefox (and others) proved to be challenging or not possible.  The only shot I had at blogging ...

Graduations are in the books, and summer is underway.  Summer tends to be a much busier time for most, and we here at the farm aren’t any different!

Memorial Day has come and gone.  Frosty Meadow Husky Farm honors all those who have served our great country, especially those who lost their life in defense of our freedom!

• This Memorial Day weekend was a very big one for us.  Our daughters, Jenna and Meranda, both graduated from high school!  Time has sure flown.  It’s time for them to begin the next chapter of their lives, as Jenna heads off to Walsh University to study Physical Therapy, and Meranda will be staying closer to home and ...

Wow…it’s been a while!  We’ve been out of town for a few days to visit family in VA Beach, and get a little R&R before the summer kicks in.  Summer is usually filled with projects, to-do’s, and events, so it was nice to get away for a few days beforehand.

• Daisie's pups are now 5 weeks old (tomorrow), and are a handful!  They went in for their vet check-up yesterday, and are good to go!  They are about 90% weaned, and will soon be fully weaned.  Daisie didn't give us much choice this time around.  At about 4 weeks, she pretty much shut them down.  Other than the occasional snack, Daisie has avoided them.  But that's ok.  That many puppies is simply too much to keep up with fo...

• Update on Daisie’s pups:  They are now 3 ½ weeks old, and are starting to run around and be playful.  As of today, there are 3 remaining white males.  We have started the de-worm process, and will be starting to wean them soon.  With larger litters, we start to wean them at 4 weeks.  The mother has trouble keeping up with milk production when there are this many puppies!  Also, they vary in size due to some getting more than others.  We will be introducing them to 4-Health soft food this...

• Latest on Daisie's pups.....They are now 18 days old, and are opening their eyes. We are happy to report at this time that they all appear to be blue!  As of this writing, Only the white males remain unsold. (as usual)  We moved them down to the "growing up" stall to make room for Rose in the birthing stall.

A big week here at the farm!

• As expected, Daisie gave birth to a large litter of puppies Saturday.  The litter was larger than expected.  Eleven total puppies, which is a new Frosty Meadow Farms record! (Previous was 10 by Miya, Holly, and Daisie.)  There were 5-all white (1-F, 4-M) and 5-black and white (3-F, 2-M).  One unfortunately, was stillborn.

Before starting into this week’s update, I will be sure to mention that today is Heather’s birthday.  Not only is Heather my beautiful wife, but also my best friend and business partner here at Frosty Meadow Farms.  She handles a lot of the behind the scenes items that go unnoticed many times.  Things like medical care, shots, pictures, and overall care for the dogs.  She certainly provides the nurturing side that is vital for the overall happiness and comfort of the Huskies.

• As spring finally starts, and Nadia’s puppies are all in their new homes, it’s time to look ahead to warmer weather!  I’m sure winter is not yet finished, but we finally get some warmer, tolerable days mixed in.

• Nadia’s puppies are 7 ½ weeks old, and as of Saturday, the final pup will be in his new home.  Once again, thanks to all who purchased puppies!  A special thanks goes to Jeff and Jessica, who bought their second puppy!  Bocephus, (Bo) joins Kenzee, who is happy to have a new chew toy…er…I mean playmate!

• Yesterday the puppies turned 5 weeks old, and they are becoming more and more ornery and playful.  They love chasing everyone around, including Chance, Nadia, Akira, Billy, and of course all of us.

• Their appetites are enormous, (as is typical) and now they are completely weaned from mama.  It becomes tough to keep them apart, but we’ve been successful.  The biggest issue is the nighttime whining.  Thank goodness, for the sake of everyone’s sanity, they quiet down eventually!

• Nadia’s pups are now 4 weeks old.  They are officially becoming like typical 4 week old puppies.  Like the 2-year old human baby, the 4-week old puppy develops this thing we all call curiosity.  It’s time to nail down all the loose ends!

• Another snow storm, and then a round of cold and nasty.  (Yawn)  Is it Spring yet?
• Of course the Huskies love it...At least playing in it.  I tend to think that in the end, they prefer it to be at least above 25.  Cold enough to snow, but not this ridiculous nonsense we are calling the winter of 2013/2014.
• We had to open the third stall back up.  It seems Aleu is starting her heat cycle, and we are skipping this one.  So she is now with Holly.  No boys allowed. :-)

• Obviously, the dogs still love to run and play, but as cold as its been, even they are finished after about an hour.  I understand it when a Husky that normally lives in the house can’t tolerate the extreme cold as well.  Chance and Akira are limited and Nadia is little miss prissy (more on her later).  However,  you know it’s cold when all of...

• As mentioned in a previous post, we are anxiously awaiting the birth of Nadia and Chance's puppies.  They are due over the next week or so.  This litter will be a little different than all the others in the past.  Being Nadia and Chance are house Huskies, this will be a learning experience.  We have everything planned as far as keeping Nadia and the puppies separated from Chance and Akira. 
  
• The biggest issue is that Chance has no trouble escaping the fenced area.  We always have to watch him ...

• As if the Holidays aren't enough to keep everyone hopping this time of year, the weather had us really going. 
  
• We go from flooding rains, to snow, COLD, and wind.
• Before this year, we have never had to deal with the "Polar Vortex" that is just now moving out of here.  With Huskies, the winter weather is not normally much of an issue.  As long as they have their shelter, plenty of food and water, and they get their exercise, there are ...

• After a couple weeks of snow and cold, we are now set for a rainy melt off.  It happens a couple times a year.  One big rain and a couple days of warmer temps, coupled with a melting snow pack, leads to flooding.  Here at the farm, The corner stall, as well as the horse stalls, are in the line of fire.  They tend to get wet and eventually puddle up.  It's Equine Fresh to the rescue.  Equine Fresh is a brand of horse bedding, ostensibly made to absorb moisture from horse stalls.  It is simply ...

• Daisie is starting to behave like her cycle will be soon.  More moody, more talkative, and bouncing off the walls, etc.  Meanwhile, the boys are starting to show interest.

• Speaking of which, Denali has a nice little gash on the top of his foot.  A result of him and Demon fighting through the stall wall.  So it’s nurse Heather to the rescue.  It’s healing nicely now, and we moved Denali and Daisie to the corner.

Took a little break from blogging over the past week or so with the holiday.  I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! 

•  I will say this…I think the dogs love the holidays more than we do!  At least the food part. 

• It’s time to get ready for Christmas.  All the decorations are up, and we are putting the finishing touches on the Frosty Meadow Christmas cards.  Thanks to everyone who contributed holiday Husky photos!  They were great!

• As mentioned before, this past weekend was the one year anniversary of our beloved Brutus passing away.  He was our second Husky, and he will always live on in our memory.  RIP buddy.

• Tomorrow (Thursday) is Miya and Peyton’s 3^rd Birthday.  Peyton is no longer with us, but we will honor her while celebrating with Miya!

• Also, Friday we will celebrate the birthday of Daisie and Denali’s litter from last year.  Born 11-22-12.  They include our Nadia, as well as Nanuk, Hank, Rocky, Moonshi...

• Not much to update this week.  The biggest thing to announce is that unfortunately, it doesn't look like Aleu will be having puppies.  Chalk up another false alarm!  Aleu is our only female that this happens to.  With each or her litters or possible litters, we literally don't know until a short period of time before the birth!

• Beyond that, we are simply in a slow time.  Our next scheduled litter is early 2014, with Daisie next in line.  We anticipate a litter from her and Denali in the month ...

As October comes to a close, we are starting to prepare for winter.  In the back play area, we decided to make a “doghouse” out of the deck.  This is mostly for Akira, Chance, and Nadia.  They do get to come in the house, but spend most of their time out there.  As with most Huskies, they PREFER it outside during the winter, but mostly this is for the rain, snow, wind, or brutal cold.  They go under there a lot anyway, but now it is more sheltered.  So far, they seem to like it.

• Milton has been delivered.  I don’t officially think that Milton will be his name, but that’s what the finders called him.  Kyle, his new owner, picked him up on Saturday.  Seems like a great fit. 

• It was great to see such an interest in Milton.  It has been our hope to be a rescue farm in addition to a breeder, and this is a step in that direction.

Miya’s puppies are 8 weeks old today!  One by one, they are heading to their new homes.   This litter was our 15^th litter, and it contained our 100^th puppy sold!  Thanks to the new puppy owners, and also all that have purchased our puppies over the years.  It’s truly been a pleasure serving you!

Still no word on whether or not Miya or Rose will be having puppies this year.  We will certainly be keeping an eye on the situation.  Beyond that, Daisie is next in line, and we anticipate a...

Miya’s puppies turn 6 weeks old today!  They have been given their clean bill of health by our vet, and will be receiving their shots over the next couple days.  They are fully weaned from Miya, and are eating and drinking very well.  They are as cute and playful as can be!

Miya has done very well with the weaning.  Some of the mothers do better than others, and she is one of the better!   Aleu, for example, will whine and cry for days.

• Miya's puppies are 5 weeks old now, and are as playful as can be.  They are now at the point of full weaning, and seem to have taken to the 4-Health canned food very well.  Soon, they will be able to the the 4-Health kibble as well.  We will be separating Miya from them today.  She really seems to want a break ...

• The day has come!  Miya’s puppies were born on 8-14, as mentioned in a previous post.  A small litter by Miya’s standards, but average in general.  Six total puppies, 5 male and 1 female.  They are all gray and white, some darker than others.  We anticipate that most or all will have blue eyes, but it’s possible that we could see a brown eye or two.

Wednesday Weekly Update for 8-7-13

• Miya is now really starting to show.  We figure her due date to be in the vicinity of August 18-20. She has been officially moved to the birthing stall.  I am not sure she likes the solitude at this point, but at the day approaches, she will be glad.

• The summer coat blowing season is finally in the homestretch.  Only Demon and Denali are still in process, and they are both at about 75% complete.  Kallen and Miya don’t seem to want to lose much this yea...

• It’s been an uneventful week here at the farm.  It’s the “calm before the storm” week if you will.  Next week the fair begins, and most of the preparations have been made.  So now we wait.

• The hay field was cut for the second time this past week.  We split the hay 50/50 with the guy that cuts and bales it.   Last year, it was cut four times and due to a dry summer, our share was only about 180 bales total.  This year, it’s been a very good season so far.  In two cuts, we already ec...

• Miya is starting to show.  She is in her 5 week of pregnancy, and depending on the size of the litter, that is usually the point where they start to swell up enough to notice.  With smaller litters (like Aleu’s litters), sometimes it is difficult to tell until about 6-7 weeks.  Both of Miya’s litters have been on the larger side, and we anticipate this will be the same.  The fact that she is swelling a little at this point tells us she...

Weekly update on what’s happening down on the farm:

• It’s been an extremely hot week!  With more still to come, extra care is being taken to aid in the comfort level of the pack.  Fans are going at full strength, water in their pool is being freshened with cold water more often, and a bowl of water containing electrolytes is on hand.  The activity level is down during heat waves.  They pretty much run to the pool, splash around, run back to the shade and lay down.  Then repeat as needed...

·         Holly’s puppies are off to the vet today.  Once they pass their physical and we administer their shots, they will be ready for pick-up!  Pick-ups will start Friday, May 3^rd.  Between Friday and Monday, we currently have 6 scheduled pick-ups, with the other 3 still pending. 

·         Next week, we will follow up with Aleu’s pups.  As of today, they are now all sold!!  Thanks to all the new puppy owners!

• I have been away from civilization for a few days, chaperoning a camp for my son's sixth grade class.  We all had a lot of fun, and the kids learned a lot about nature, teamwork, and core values.  It was a great experience!

Well, Nadia failed the test today.

Up to this point, she has been left in the house overnight and during the day when no one is here.  Both Nadia and Akira come in overnight.  Akira is fully house trained, but Stink is only about 80% there.  If someone is here, no problem.  We let her out as needed.  Overnight is still a little too long for her so we put down a puppy pad.  She knows to go only there.  During the day, we simply let out Akira.  As a Husky, Akira is….well….differe...

·         Holly is ready to give birth.  Here she is lying inside her box.  Usually, she comes running when anyone comes out.  This will be Holly’s 4^th litter, so she is likely to only have one more before retiring her.  At this point, we have not ruled out a 6^th, but that would absolutely be the last.  It will depend on her health and our vet’s opinion.  She has been a great mother, and has produced some of the best puppies!

·         The snow didn’t disappoint.  At least the dogs.  We got about 6-8 inches.  Akira and Nadia went out this morning and were running around having a great time.  I think they forgot they had to do their business.  Too much fun! 

·         This was Nadia’s first real snowfall that she got to play in.  For the storm after Christmas, she was only about 4 weeks old, and didn’t get to play in it.  She had a BLAST!  The rest of the dogs will get to play this afternoo...

·         Not much activity today.  Getting ready for the big snow storm.  Right now, it is a cold rain, to the point of a very good soaking.  Makes for a very sloppy premises.

Friday 3-1-13

March is finally here!  It came in like a lion.  (cold/rain/snow/nasty)  By rule, this means it goes out like a lamb.  (warmer, sunny) (hopefully!)  Akira and Nadia were running around in circles outside, long enough to almost wear a pattern in the grass.  One thing is for certain…come springtime, we will need to fertilize the dog area and also the horse pasture.  Probably even spread some grass seed.  Winter usually takes its toll on the grass in the animal areas.  It should...

It's been a whirlwind the last couple months here at Frosty Meadow Husky Farm!  It all started back in late July.

* Upon arriving home from vacation in late July, Aleu and Miya both gave birth to their litters of puppies, followed by Holly 2 weeks later.
* In early August, we were swamped with activity due to the Miami County Fair, and visits to the farm by future puppy owners.
