The coldest weekend of the year doesn’t do much for us humans in terms of getting things done outdoors, but it does provide for some additional “Huskyisms”!  As I watch from a wind-shielded area, it never ceases to amaze me how much they love the cold.

  • Wind chill?  What’s that??  Kallen is facing the wind trying to catch it in his mouth.
  • The plastic pool is still out, with a couple inches of water and now frozen on top.  Ice is no fun…Let’s break the ice so we can play in the water!
  • At this point, the only thing missing is a bunch of snow for them to roll around in.
  • It does snow, on and off, and they (Kallen, Rose, and Miya) begin to run and jump and try to catch flakes in their mouth.  You simply have to love the care free life of a Husky!
  • Meanwhile, behind me in the barn, is Kenny Chesney singing, “All I Want for Christmas is a Real Good Tan”.  Conflict of interest? Perhaps.
  • Before letting them out on Saturday, I made a large pan of Chicken soup.  (for dogs.  No salt, noodles, etc.)  I boiled the last of our unused chicken backs, legs, gibblets, and necks, removed all the bones, and it made for a nice cold weather meal for them.
  • One by one, as they were let back in from playing,  they stopped to devour a big bowl full.  They love the broth, but it’s funny to watch them bobb for chicken.  They want to eat every piece of chicken first, then drink the broth.  When finished, their entire face is dripping with soup.  Licking it off each other’s face is their after dinner snack.
  • If Billy the Cat isn’t careful, he will be part of the chicken soup dinner.  Finally, I just give him his own bowl far away from them, because he insists on having his share.
  • Back in the stalls, there are birds taking refuge from the cold.  In the barn is one thing, but like Billy, they seem to have an interest in the dogs.  I am expecting feather messes over the next few days.  Ugh!
