Now that summer has wound down and Autumn is beginning, it’s time for another Husky Report.  Plenty going on, so let’s get to it:

  • First and foremost, Most of you by now know of the passing of our beloved Daisie Mae.  She was one of our original 3 huskies.  (Along with Holly and Brutus)  Of the 3, only Holly now survives.  We will miss Daisie.  She had her own demeanor that will never be duplicated!
  • Saturday, we had our 5th annual Husky Reunion.  It was in our opinion, very successful!  Roughly 20 huskies (and families) attended, and as usual we all mingled and shared stories.  The reunion is not necessarily about the numbers, but about staying in touch regularly with husky lovers.  We believe here at Frosty Meadow Husky Farm that once you buy (or rescue) a husky from us, you are family.  Our dogs bring us all together with a common denominator.  We hope to continue to see it grow!

  • In the last Husky Report, we announced the upcoming litters from Aleu, Miya, and Ember.  However, things do change in this crazy world.  Only Aleu ended up with a litter.  She had 6 puppies that are now 3 weeks old.  They are all sold and will go to their new homes toward the end of October.  Thanks to all the new puppy owners!
  • We were waiting a while for our next wave of heat cycles.  We expected Josie, Phoenix, and Lula sometime in August, but they were all delayed until mid-September.  We didn’t expect Iris until later in October, but she came in a month ahead of schedule.  For sure, they have a tendency to sync heat cycles.  All this said, we do believe all 4 to be pregnant, with their litters arriving mid-late November.  At this point we will say they are unconfirmed, so stay tuned for updates as we can pass them along.
  • With the summer coming to a close, we begin to wrap up all or most of the summer activities.  With no Miami County Fair this year (for us), our turkeys and our first 25 chickens have all gone to processing.  We just recently acquired 30 baby chicks that are about half way grown now.  The will be off to processing around the end of October.  That will do it for another year of poultry.
  • Once the chickens are out of the barn, we will begin phase two of the new stalls.  Back in the Spring, we overhauled the corner stall to make it 2 stalls, and put a concrete floor in them.  They have taken to these new stalls very well.  We are still working on the “potty box” training, but overall the new stalls have been successful.  We will be adding 3 additional “new design” stalls down the west wall.  Once completed, we will look into modifying the stalls on the north wall, and ultimately adding some to the east wall.  Additionally, we will be expanding the loft over the top of the stalls.  The added stall space with make things much easier when we get multiple heat cycles all at once!
  • With the close of summer, the area harvest is also beginning.  This year is much sooner.  At current rate, most of the harvest should be in by mid-October.  Last year, they were in the fields until almost Thanksgiving!
  • One of the signs of Autumn I also look forward to is the Harvest Moon.  It’s the full moon closest to the first day of Autumn.  I’m not sure why I like it so much.  Probably because I love Autumn, and the bright moonlight on the ready-to-be harvested fields coupled with the crisp autumn air is a delight.  I really enjoy country life!  I cannot imagine the same feeling living in the city.
  • This year’s Harvest Moon gave us a special treat.  As most of you know and/or witnessed, it was coupled with a total lunar eclipse.  A Blood Moon as they call it.  It was a nice treat.  I only wish it was Saturday night so I could have stayed up later!
  • Now that the cold is setting in, it’s time to put away the fans in the barn, and soon we will follow with the swimming pool.  It won’t be long we will be wiring in the electric buckets and heat lamps, as well as the window covers!

Some observations from the past few weeks:

  • Holly has always been jealous when I show attention to the others.  She was always especially jealous of Daisie.  With Daisie now gone, I was wondering how she would behave.  The other day, we let Ember in the house to eat, just because.  Ember loved it, and was running around wanting everyone’s attention.   I was sitting in a chair and she came running over and hopped up into my lap.  Holly immediately leaped to her feet and came running!  She snapped at Ember, and was visibly upset!  Apparently, I am her property!
  • Chance is the same way with Heather.  He gets upset when any attention is given to anyone else by her.  What's funny is that sometimes he will hop up into someone else's lap, and then turn and taunt Heather.  Funny!
  • Most know and have read about the liquid diet that Chance is and has been on since he was a pup.  To this day, he still gets his blended up diet in the form of a milkshake or soup.  Funny thing though is that the others in the house want the same diet.  They get the exact same food, but theirs is not run through a blender first.  They seem to think that Chance gets special food that is better than theirs.  Chance normally doesn’t eat his entire bowl full, and the others (esp. Nadia, Akira, Czar, and Lula) line up to eat what’s left.
  • The other day, I was emptying and refilling their pool.  It takes a while, so typically I let the hose run while I am off doing other things.  This day was no different.  Josie decided that she wanted to have some fun.  So she grabbed the hose end while I wasn’t looking, and took off running.  When I turned around, she was running around with the hose, and several others were chasing her.  I had to pause and laugh a moment before rescuing the hose.
  • Recently, Phoenix found an old small bucket that I inadvertently left in their area.  She reached down and picked it up, but did it a way so that the bucket covered her eyes and top of her head.  For no apparent reason, she decided to start running.  Blindly.  Chaos ensued.

Until next time!!
