On our first “Tuesday Tech Talk” segment, we will start with
something relatively simple. Obviously
Huskies (or dogs in general) need hydration.
While it’s obvious that during these hot months it’s especially true, it
is also true throughout the rest of the year as well. One tip we try to utilize as often as
possible is to save any unused broth when boiling any type of meat. Many times we will boil chicken for a
particular recipe. If the broth isn’t
needed, we simply put it to the side, let it cool, and give a bowl to the
huskies. They love it! As a caution however, if you give them all
they want, they tend to throw it back up.
So just a bowl at a time, and refrigerate and even freeze the rest for
future broth treats!
Electrolytes in water
Another tip that is pertinent in this summer heat is
Electrolytes. Since Huskies are very
active dogs, they obviously need a lot of water. One thing to keep in mind is that they also may
need electrolytes. Much in the same way
humans may need to drink Gatorade, Huskies may need their own version. We use “Durvet”. (see photo)
It says for use on Livestock and Poultry, but we have been told it works
well with dogs also.
This is not necessary all the time, but perhaps it’s
beneficial after a long period of running or playing especially in warmer
weather. (remember warmer to a Husky may
be still cold to a human!) Think in
terms of humans and Gatorade. It’s not
good ALL the time, but is good during times of high activity.
We purchase Durvet from our local country store, but it
might also be found at Tractor Supply, at pet stores, or online. There are others out there if you do an
online search, plus I don’t think even Gatorade itself is a bad choice!
