Tuesday Tech Talk -- Quick Bits

- We were asked recently about the effectiveness of shots bought over the counter. This person had been told that the shots at the vet are more effective. This question had been asked before, so I figured I should give my thoughts here. I should add that our vet concurs with these thoughts. It is NOT the shot itself that is the problem. It’s in the handling and administering. First and foremost, the shot must be administered properly by someone trained to handle a needle. Heather, being a nurse, is definitely that person for us. Secondly, proper handling is essential. The shots must remain refrigerated at all times until use. When left out, the effectiveness is only about a half hour. When we purchase shots, we bring a cooler with ice for the transport home. By following this protocol, we believe our shots to be every bit as effective as those given by a vet. Also understand that we only give the FIRST set of shots. It is of utmost importance that you get with your vet and schedule the second and third set within 30 and 60 days of their first set. Then, of course, the rabies shots in the following months based on your vets recommendations.
- The fur factory – Over the years, we have tried several different vacuum cleaners for the purpose of picking up the mountains of husky hair. From the less expensive, (Around $50) to the most expensive Kirby (Around $1800). After our own trials, as well as some feedback from others, we have determined the recommended vacuum based on price and effectiveness is the Shark. Kirby was effective, but much too costly. The $50 Cheap one from Walmart (don’t remember brand) was effective for about 2 weeks, and then went over the rainbow to see Dorothy and Toto. The Shark was around $250, and is very effective. We have had it for some time now, and it continues to impress. We are very happy with it. We also heard good things about the Dysons, but haven’t tried them. I just know that they are more expensive than the Shark. Any way you go, good grooming is definitely a plus to help keep it down. More on this in another post of TTT.
- A quick tidbit we learned from our vet: If you notice cracking on your Huskies nose, it is an indication of low zinc levels in them. It is a common issue among northern breeds. A zinc supplement may be in order.
