Tuesday Tech Talk...Rescuing Huskies
In light of a couple conversations I had recently, I felt it would be a good time today on Tuesday Tech Talk to re-visit the need for rescuing Huskies. On occasion, we get calls from various individuals wanting us to take in their Husky. There are a variety of reasons it may be needed. The Husky was found, the owner was not aware of the pitfalls of owning a husky, and sometimes even because of the Husky’s natural predatory instincts are causing issues of local animals. Whatever the case may be, it is sad to see any dog, let alone Huskies, end up in a shelter.
Here at Frosty Meadow Farms, we have a policy in place to take in our own puppies that we sell that do not work out in the new homes. Any good breeder WILL do this. Please be wary of those that don’t. The responsibility falls on the breeder to ensure the welfare of unwanted Huskies. It is the responsibility of the breeder and the new owner to be aware of the pitfalls of owning a husky. Now let me clarify…We do not refund any part of the purchase price for unwanted Huskies. Before purchasing a new Husky puppy, please do your homework and know what you are getting ready to purchase. While Huskies are one of the most beautiful and loving dogs in existence, they are also a high maintenance dog. They require a lot of exercise, and cannot be let out to run on their own. They will not just “hang out” with the owner. They must be in a fenced area, on a leash, or TEMPORARILY on a chain. We try to educate potential buyers the ins and outs of owning Huskies, and we are available for support for the life of the Husky, which includes (but not limited to) our private group on Facebook.
As far as random rescues (That we did not breed), we have to be very selective if we take any in. Our goal is to one day be a full rescue facility, but this takes time. We continue to expand, but are currently only able to take in our own. Those in need of finding new homes, the first step is to contact your breeder. Beyond that, the internet is also a good method of finding a new home. Craigslist is an example of a good place to start.
The best way we can help is to take names of volunteers for the purpose of rescuing and/or fostering unwanted Huskies. If there is anyone interested in this, please contact us and let us know.
