It's been an eventful week/week-and-a-half here at the farm!

  • As if the Holidays aren't enough to keep everyone hopping this time of year, the weather had us really going.
  • We go from flooding rains, to snow, COLD, and wind.
  • Before this year, we have never had to deal with the "Polar Vortex" that is just now moving out of here.  With Huskies, the winter weather is not normally much of an issue.  As long as they have their shelter, plenty of food and water, and they get their exercise, there are no issues.  Well, this year, old man winter decided to throw a monkey wrench into things.
  • While I believe they could survive the 15 degrees below zero cold air, I know it can't be very comfortable.  We really put forth an extra effort to make their stalls comfortable.  We closed up all the windows, gave them extra thick beds of straw, set up heat lamps, and stayed on top of their food and water.
  • Play time was very limited, but that was mostly due to us wimpy humans that simply couldn't take the cold.
  • Two of our electric buckets don't work, and Tractor Supply was out.  (ugh!)  So we had to go out every two to three hours and give the two stalls fresh water.  It froze solid in about an hour.
  • We didn't get the snow we were expecting, but there was certainly no shortage of winter!
  • As if the Huskies weren't enough of a chore, We had the horses to deal with as well!

And finally...

After a long wait, we have the special exciting news we can pass along!

We have a litter of puppies due in a couple weeks.  But what makes this one special, is it will be Nadia's first litter!  But that's not all.  After VERY careful consideration, we decided to let Chance be the father!

A few decisions had to be made:

  • Should we let Nadia be a momma now or wait until next heat cycle?  We start all of our females on the second cycle, and Nadia was on her second.  We decided that while she is a little smaller in stature, she was fully ready to have pups.
  • Would the father be Kallen or Chance?
  • Should Chance be the father of any litter?  With the issues he has, there is the possibility of the condition being passed down.
  • Well, we chose Chance.  Knowing the risks, we decided we would not sell any puppies until they were about 4 weeks old.  By that time, we would be certain whether or not any of the puppies have Chance's condition.
  • If any have the condition, we will keep them and care for them the same way we do Chance.
  • After thinking about this for quite some time, we made our decision based of Chance's love for life.  We have been wanting to cross the bloodlines of Holly and Daisie, and this gives us our first opportunity.  We will be getting Chance fixed in the near future, but decided to let him and Nadia have one litter first.  They are both very special Huskies to us, and we are beyond convinced that anyone who buys their puppies will be receiving some of the best puppies available.  Both have fantastic personalities!  Grandparents are Holly, Kallen, Daisie, and Denali.
  • Since it is Holly's bloodline, they will of course not be AKC puppies.  We will simply sell them as non-registered.

We will keep everyone up to date on their progress!
