It’s Humpday!  And time again for the weekly update with miscellaneous tidbits…

  • Nadia’s pups are now 4 weeks old.  They are officially becoming like typical 4 week old puppies.  Like the 2-year old human baby, the 4-week old puppy develops this thing we all call curiosity.  It’s time to nail down all the loose ends!
  • Of course it takes a long time (if ever) to outgrow this phase, right Chance?
  • Speaking of Chance, he is doing very well with the puppies.  Normally we don’t let our males associate with their puppies until they are around 5-6 weeks old.  Too much of a risk of the puppy getting hurt.  We let Chance meet them early on (under watchful eye), and he has done very well.  We posted several pictures on Facebook of him playing with/watching the puppies.
  • Funniest moment of the week came when one of the B&W male puppies snuck up behind Chance while he was lying around and yapped in his ear.   After Chance wet himself, he took off upstairs.  Seems Crackhead has met his match!
  • We’ve started the weaning process.  They should be fully weaned by this weekend, or at 5 weeks old at the latest.  All the pups are taking very well to the soft food.  Nadia is relieved to not have to feed them as much.  It is comical though watching them chase her around the room wanting fed.  She will only allow them a couple times per day to nurse.
  • In the barn, the others are enjoying the nicer weather.  Miya is fully through her heat cycle, so she gets to play with the others.  Daisie is almost finished, and as previously mentioned in another post, we expect her next litter toward the end of March.
  • Rose is also coming to the end of a heat cycle.  She is scheduled to also have a litter, but we are not as certain about her.  With Daisie, we witnessed a couple ties with Denali.  Not with Rose and Kallen.  There is still a good chance, but we will wait to be certain.
  • Next in line to have pups is Holly.  She is expected to begin any time now, and would have pups in early May (roughly).  As mentioned, this will be Holly’s final litter.  We will be keeping at least one, and maybe two of the females to continue the bloodline.
  • A big deal is made by some about non-registered puppies, and whether or not they should be bred.  Most of our Huskies are AKC registered.  Holly is not.  Any of Holly’s descendants, (including Chance) will not be either.  Way back in her ancestry, Holly has a Malamute branch.  Holly herself is 1/8 Malamute, and 7/8 Siberian Husky.  Her pups, (since they are bred with our AKC huskies) are all 15/16  Siberian Husky.  What does this mean?  Well, if you are collecting pedigree papers it means a lot.  Our experience is that most are not.  Simply put, Holly is the best dog I have personally ever owned or met.  Her puppies tend to look a lot like her, and have similar personalities.  We get more requests for her puppies than any of the others.  This doesn’t mean the other puppies we sell are no good, it simply means that (in my eyes) a piece of paper doesn’t make or break a dog.  Some love the pedigree, where others it doesn’t matter as much.
  • Closing on a sadder note, Next Tuesday is the one year anniversary of the unexpected death of our beloved horse Buckeye Dan.  He was a great horse, and will live on in our memories.
