Frosty Meadow Husky Farm, Fletcher, Ohio

The Husky Tales -- Part 1

December 11, 2018

Hi!  My name is Holly, and I might be off base,

but these dogs that I live with, are all a basket case!

They’re all young and hyper, and they bounce off the walls.

And they tend to ignore their owner’s calls.

  Unlike me, I’m older now.

I’m calm and I’m tepid, This much I vow!

You see, I’m the oldest…the oldest of all.

I was the first of many Huskies, born in 2007, late in the fall.

Was there ever a time when I was that bad?

There is no way in ****! I was never that sad!

My owner says ha! But I say it’s true.

I was an angel among devils. He doesn’t have a clue!

I’ll give some examples of things that they do.

Individually or collectively, it’s like they live in a zoo!

But first a description of the farm where I rule.

A five acre property, about a mile from the school.

With the hay and the grass as far as I can see,

There is room to run, and run with much glee.

The problem is trust between the owners and me,

It’s only where it’s fenced, that I can run free.

But it’s not me that this story’s about,

Again, it’s the others, of this there’s no doubt!

I will give some examples of these dogs and their ways,

You will see what I mean and it won’t take you days.

I’ll start with some older, yet younger than me,

like Aleu the big doofus, she drives me up a tree!

She chases me around, as if I wanted to play,

I really have no interest, we’re like night and day!

I’m graceful, athletic, and can jump here to there.

She’s inept and clumsy, much like a bear.

There was this time, she was chasing me around.

I jumped over a wall, landing safely on the ground.

She tried to do the same, jumped as high as she could,

but crashed into the side, like I knew she would.

I laughed and I laughed at the wonderful sight,

of Aleu’s failed attempt, to take off in flight.

Are there other examples of how they behave?

Absolutely!  Read on! But that one’s my fave.

I remember this time we were all in our stall,

just me and 3 others, well after night fall.

I got the idea that if I jiggled the door,

the latch would come open, like I’ve done before.

I jiggled and jiggled, and just like I guessed,

the door just popped open, and you know the rest!

We ran and we ran, we were suddenly free.

But the others ran farther, I’m a good girl you see!

I ran to the house and started barking aloud,

to tell on the others, and act very proud.

Our owner was mad when he found out,

that we had all escaped, and were running about.

He tried to blame me, but I’ve done nothing wrong!

All I did was open the door, not run far and long!

It’s the others that are bad, it’s certainly not me.

But our owner tends to blame me…why, I don’t see!

Then there is Brutus, my best friend of all,

but rats me out constantly, despite it all!

He’s big and he’s bulky, and much like Aleu,

he isn’t very graceful, and he doesn’t have a clue.

Whenever I escape, or do something wrong,

he whines and he cries, because he wants to go along.

Because of his body, his size, and his bulk,

he’s not an escape artist, heck…he can barely even walk!

But he gets so upset when I run about.

He cries and he cries!  Why can’t he just pout?

His cries alert our owner, who sees what I’ve done,

but again it was Brutus , I wasn’t the one!

These dogs always seem to run, play, and cry,

but my owner blames me, and I will never know why.

My archrival Daisie, don’t get me started with her.

She’s long since passed, so my memory’s a blur.

I’m the owner’s favorite, this much is true.

But Daisie thought otherwise, and she made much ado.

He loved on her much, this I could see,

and whenever this happened, she became my enemy.

We’d growl and we’d hiss, and we made it no doubt,

that things would soon escalate and a fight would break out.

We fought very hard, and other’s jumped in,

but our owner ended it quickly and no one would win.

He’d punish us both by sending us back to our stall,

and made us stay put, separated by a wall.

But yet once again, I knew I had won,

for I was the favorite and I was more fun.

My story with Daisie goes very far back,

as we were 2 of the first 3 members of the pack.

I was the first, and more loved I know.

Then Daisie came along and tried to steal the show.

Before her was Brutus, my very best friend

but as mentioned before, he annoyed me to the end.

Daisie was different, the worst of them all,

When it came to trouble, she always stood tall.

Like the time that she thought, she could escape just like me,

and tried to get out, by climbing a tree.

But I showed her that she was so dense,

That escaping was simple, through the hole in the fence!

It’s no wonder our owner loved me more than her,

Her ideas, any that surfaced, got stuck in her fur.

She followed me out and away we ran,

along with 3 others, but that wasn’t the plan.

We ran and we ran, into Fletcher we went.

Almost 3 miles, until we were spent.

This small town of Fletcher, where there were very few,

we, as a group, were the Huskies they knew.

The town isn’t but a half mile long,

so everyone knew us, and they knew something was wrong.

Our owners chased us around, through all the streets of the town,

with the help of the neighbors, they finally brought us down.

If it wasn’t for me, we’d have never been caught,

for I, ONLY I, know what’s been taught.

  Escaping’s not allowed, it’s our #1 rule,

I tried to tell Daisie, but she was such a fool!

Daisie was always trying to prove me wrong.

If she didn’t stop, she wouldn’t be around long.

Our owner won’t put up with it, he’s told me as such.

But I know I’m the favorite, so it doesn’t affect me much.

The adventure into Fletcher, as it soon became known,

wasn’t a big deal, it was way overblown.

It was me simply proving a point to her,

That I was more smart and more loved, to be sure.

I don’t understand how she thought it was me,

It was always her fault, when we would run free!

When we were not being bad, and not running free,

we were allowed to go out into the back yard you see.

We were both always there, but we stayed apart,

For if we got close, again, a fight would start.

In the yard it was different, it was tough to get out.

Being bad wasn’t the issue, but being more loved is what it’s about.

There was simply no way she was loved more than me!

No matter how much attention she thinks there should be.

Whenever our owner would come out to play,

She ran to his side, and stayed there all day!

Sometimes he would sit on the large wooden chair,

She would always jump up on his lap and stay there.

I would come running, and show that I was upset,

But Daisie glared back, every chance she would get.

How can our owner not see her evil ways?

I honestly can’t tell you, he must be in a daze.

I know that deep down that I’m the favorite for sure

It’s not hard to tell that I’m more loved than her.

We’ve both been a mom throughout the years.

Her outdoing me was one of my fears.

I wanted more pups and I wanted to be first,

but again, here we go…she’s just the worst.

She had a litter of pups, before I knew what went down,

Always trying to outdo me!  Boy, what a clown!

But I showed her, and before she knew,

I had not only one litter, but actually had two!

Not sure what happened to her for the last couple years,

But I know me having my second, left her in tears.

She immediately got going on litters two and three,

She thought she could be better by outdoing me.

But alas it would happen, at the same time as her,

My third came along, and it was bigger for sure!

Not only did I have more puppies to sell,

Mine were the right colors, and genders as well.

I saw some of her puppies that came out all-white,

An all-white husky!  HA! What a sight!

A traditional husky has a black and white mask,

But she decided on white…Why?  Don’t even ask.

Something about her rubbed me the wrong way,

She was my archrival, all night and all day.

I guess looking back, it wasn’t all bad,

The older we got, the less I was mad.

I knew I was better at all we had done.

Once she accepted that, she was more fun.

Daisie is gone now, passed a few years back.

Yet strangely I miss her, as part of the pack.

We hated each other, this was so true,

but still I miss her, that lovable shrew.

The Husky Report, 11-21-18

November 21, 2018

A quick Pre-Thanksgiving update!

Winter is rapidly approaching,  and we are hustling to prepare everything for its onslaught.  The back wall is finished, complete with new windows and insulation.  The old stalls in the northwest corner are gone and the two windows have been replaced, as well as the framing and insulation.  The corner is ready for the new stalls that will be there.  In the front (southwest) corner, 2 small windows have been added as well.  The entire barn is now insulated, mi...

The Husky Report, 10-2-18

October 2, 2018

A lot has happened on the farm since our last blog!  Our apologies for the delays in keeping up to date!

The spring/summer litters are all now in their new homes:

Very Cool and Interesting Colors

A few of our spring litter’s had interesting colors (a few agouti and dirty faced pups) as Gypsy and Quinn had their first litters.  Some of our most beautiful pups came from these litters!  We loved the colors so much that it enticed us to purchase Onyx.  (More on her later)

Final Litters/Ret...

In Memory of our Beloved Holly

April 24, 2018

As was announced yesterday, Our beloved Holly passed away at the age of 10. Born on December 11th, 2007, Holly was our very first Husky.  She was one of the original 3, as we like to call them.  Holly, Daisie Mae, and Brutus were our first 3 huskies, and set the tone for what is now a wonderful business.  They are all gone now, but will forever live in our hearts and certainly will live on through their children and grandchildren.  Holly was truly a unique Husky that taught us almost everythi...

The Husky Report, 2/25/18

February 25, 2018

It’s that time of the year!  The wonderful mud and muck that arrives in the late winter and early spring.  While there wasn’t much in the way of snow melt-off this year, there hasn’t been a shortage of rain.  The play area for the dogs has become a muddy mess.  Bag after bag of pine pellets have certainly been helpful, but Mother Nature has been quite relentless of late.  The pine pellets break down into saw dust and do a great job in absorbing moisture.  A little goes a long way, but w...

The Husky Report, 12-22-17

December 22, 2017

Christmas season is upon us, and all of the decorations are up including the Nativity, the lights, and the tree.  The lawn mower, grill, and other “summer” items are tucked away for the winter.  Soon, the snow will fly.

In past seasons, as the fans in the barn get put away, the electric buckets and heat lamps come out.  This year is a little different.  We did put out the heat lamps for all of the pups, and will likely do the same for the upcoming litters, but they will not be needed a...

Feeding Frenzy

November 6, 2017

When you have 20+ dogs, regardless of breed, feeding time is always an experience.  There really are no shortcuts in terms of what works well and not as well.  Over time, you can definitely pick up on the dogs preferences and nuances.  Some of them are…well…funny.  Just some observations from watching them eat over the years…

Holly:  Will not eat outside.  Only in the house.  Lays on the floor with her head resting on the side of the bowl, the bowl tilted, and she rarely comes up for...

The Husky Report, 10-27-17

October 27, 2017

*  Once again, I’ve slacked a little with blogging, and it’s now been a few months since the last one.  So I am long overdue with updates!

*  The summer litters are all now in their new homes.  Overall, it was a disappointing summer and early fall puppy-wise.  Since Luna’s litter in April, we only had 3 litters.  (Ice, Ziva, & Josie)  Many of the anticipated heat cycles were delayed longer than expected.  The good news is that we are now looking at a very active fall and winter.  As of...

The Husky Report, 7/17/17

July 17, 2017

Ice has given birth to 5 pups!  4-females and 1 male.  The male is all-white, and the females are white, red and white, and 2 gray and whites.  They were born early Sunday morning July 9th, a little behind their anticipated arrival of July the 4th.  They are sold or are sale pending.  The expected go home time will be Labor Day Weekend.  Ziva meanwhile, is expected to give birth any time now.  She is looking big, so we feel the possibility of a big litter exists.  But as with every other litt...

Patience

June 27, 2017

In this world of instant gratification which we now live, patience is a very rare commodity.  It started decades ago with items such as instant cameras and instant oatmeal, and today has gotten a lot worse with the age of instant information.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way in the puppy world.  We are continuously amazed and amused by the people that call, text, or email 2 days before Christmas in hopes of getting a puppy for their loved one, and expect to have it in their posses...
